Gall Bladder Stones - Overview
Gallstone formation is the most common disorder of biliary tract. They are the solid materials that are formed in the gallbladder. Men and women both can suffer from gallstones; it is more prevalent in middle aged women. Modern medicine has classified gallstones into 3 types: cholesterol stones, bile pigment stones and mixed stones. Their size varies from few millimeters sand like granules to several centimeters like a golf ball. When these stones get trapped in the duct inside the gallbladder it causes abrupt intense abdominal pains that last for 1-5 hours.
Causes of Gall Bladder Stone
Formation of gallstones is basically caused by congestion and obstruction in the flow of bile. Many factors like body weight; food habits; hormonal imbalance during or after pregnancy and menopause; and genetic predisposition play a role in formation of gallstones. Fatty, sweet and non-vegetarian foods, obesity, diabetes and estrogen hormone in women's often increases the cholesterol which leads to cholesterol stone formation. Spicy and fried food, liver disorders like cirrhosis, fatty liver and blood disorders (sickle cell anemia) are responsible for bile pigment stone formation. Combination fatty, non-vegetarian, spicy and fried food can result in the formation of mixed type of stones.
