Swelling and Edema - Overview
Swelling & Edema is a general response of body to injury or inflammation. Edema is a medical term for swelling that affects a small area of body or entire body. It is a condition which is characterized by fluid retention in the body's tissues which results in the swelling. Swelling can also be either an indicator of problems with your lifestyle or an indication of underlying health issue like kidney problem, high blood pressure. Edema may affect the arms, hands, legs, feet and ankle.
Causes of Swelling and Edema
When we sit or stay in one position for long time then we find swelling on our feet. But what causes swelling and edema? Swelling or Edema causes due to potassium deficiency, excess intake of salt in diet, gaining weight, sports or accidental injuries, high blood pressure, staying in same posture for a long time. Medications, chemotherapy, contraceptive pills, skin disease or allergies, tight clothes, wrong size shoes and lack of exercise are other causes of Swelling & Edema.
